“Kokanee Sky” is a very topical painting to those of us living in the Tahoe Basin. Fall is the time of year when we anticipate the Kokanee Salmon’s migration upstream to spawning grounds. The males turn a bright red – as seen in Albanese’s sky. The introduction of the owl, looking directly at us, implies a symbol of portent. As with nature, all is not perpetually rosy in these paintings. Is Albanese implying the imminent death of the Kokanee salmon once they make their migratory journey? Or perhaps he is alluding to the inevitable cycle of life and death.
